Tumblr SEO, Part 3

I was searching this evening for other people talking about Tumblr SEO, and I didn’t find much, but this tip from Joe Lazarus reminded me of an important point that was implicit in my previous post on Tumblr SEO, but I probably should have been explicit about.

joelaz:

The other day when I was futzing with my Tumblr theme, I made a change to the way my page titles are generated for Google and other search engines.  By default, most Tumblr themes display page titles as a combination of blog name and post name in that order.  For example, this post would typically appear in Google as…

If you’re comfortable editing your theme, you can easily switch it to read like this instead…

Tumblr SEO Traffic Tip - Joe Lazarus

Unless you’re internet famous, I’m guessing the latter example drives more traffic since it leads with the topic the person searched on as opposed to whatever name you gave to your blog.  Give it a shot if you care about search engine traffic.  I would provide the exact code change, but it might vary by theme and I wouldn’t want to cause any problems.  Most likely the people who read this far can figure it out themselves given the nerd factor of this post.

You’ll notice in on Tumblr SEO Part 1, I put the PostSummary before the Tumblog Title inside the Title tag. As Joe says, this is pretty important and I should have been explicit about this.

This is a good tip to keep in mind for content sites as well as for blogs. Eg, if you have a restaurant reviews site, “Schiller’s Reviews - MyReviewsSite.com” is better than “MyReviewsSite.com: Schiller’s Reviews” if you want to capture searches for Schiller’s reviews.
