Vibram Five Fingers Shoes: The Barefoot Alternative
Rafer sez:
People mention 4HWW to me all the time, figuring that I run my life the Ferris way. However, I’ve never read the book or even been to the site until now. I’ll eventually take a look through the rest of Ferris’ stuff, but we at least agree from the instep down. I’m only 36 hours into the FiveFingers, and I’m a believer. I wore them all afternoon yesterday, including a couple miles on a treadmill, and all day today. I’m forming some new callouses and my foot muscles are a bit sore from unaccustomed effort, but I’m a believer. It’s really going to annoy me when I need to put on “real” shoes again. With a little luck, I might be able to skate through for a week or more without doing so.
I don’t need pointy toes to speak at Search Engine Strategies on Thursday do I?

kortina’s bit: I picked up a pair of these vibrams a few weeks ago and love them equally. I have been intending to post a detailed review, but for now I’ll just go with a simple reply to Rafer.
Vibrams are super comfy, though they look kind of silly. I’ve been doing boat shoes when I want something with very flat soles that looks like an actual shoe.
Besides the arch support benefits, the separation of toes by the five finger shoes seems to keep my feet better ventilated during the summer time.
Another side benefit: more sensory input. I have forgotten what it’s like to collect all sorts of tactile data through simply walking over different surfaces. What a pleasure.
Finally: these shoes make me want to go trail running badly.
